Your Appointment

Getting Braces

 adult female with braces

The appointment to have braces placed is scheduled for 1.5-2 hours to allow our team the opportunity to take diagnostic records and then polish the teeth prior to the placement of braces. We set aside time to teach you about your new smile and how to take care of appliances and keep teeth healthy.

Regular Appointments

We want to see you regularly to monitor your progress throughout your treatment. During these check-ups, we’ll change the archwire and elastics, as well as make any necessary adjustments to your braces. The main purpose of braces is to apply gentle pressure to your teeth in order to bring them into proper alignment. These mild activations may be made during your check-up appointments, and you might experience some slight discomfort for a couple of days as your teeth shift. Keep in mind, this is only temporary; the discomfort will quickly subside.

Scheduling Adjustment Appointments

Adjustment appointments are made on a regular basis, typically every 6-10 weeks apart. Each appointment can last anywhere from 20-45 minutes, depending on the type of work that needs to be done. The average time for an adjustment appointment is about 30 minutes. We typically schedule longer appointment times before 3 p.m. when we plan to add multiple brackets or additional appliances. Also, please schedule your next appointment at each visit to allow the most flexibility for the following visit at a time that works best with your schedule.

Repairing Braces

If your braces break or are damaged, please call our office. We will do our best to assess how we’ll fix your braces. Depending on how many repairs are necessary, a repair appointment can last longer than a simple adjustment. If this is the case, we may need to schedule you a “repair” appointment prior to 3 p.m.

Removal of Braces

Having braces removed is a very exciting time. We want to make sure you maintain your new smile for a lifetime so retainers are very important. We schedule a long appointment for 1.5-2 hours and coordinate with our laboratory so that a retainer can be made before you leave. Taking good care of retainers is very important. Each person is different, so we have options of removable and permanent retainers to accommodate each patient.

Please be very careful with retainers so that they last a long time. We will review specific instructions when braces come off. We follow our patients for 5 years after braces are removed. Always bring your retainer when you come to see us to have us evaluate the fit and determine if it is holding up as expected. If a retainer is lost or broken, please contact us to determine how soon we need to take an impression for a new appliance. Replacement retainers are ordered and will not be available the same day as the impression is taken.
